墨香沉浮:师然书法家的笔墨情怀

在一个风和日丽的北京秋天,师然(白煦) sits in his modest study, surrounded by the soft glow of incense and the quiet rustle of ancient papers. His hands, weathered by time and practice, move with a grace that belies their age as he dips his brush into a pool of ink.

A native Beijinger, born on October 26th, 1949, into a family that cherished literature and art. He was destined to follow in the footsteps of China's great calligraphers. Graduating from Beijing Normal University's Education Department with a major in Book Arts, he went on to become an influential figure within China's literary circles.

His passion for script lies in its ability to evoke emotions – both deep-seated and fleeting. The fluid lines of his works are not just mere strokes on paper but rather an expression of the soul. Inspired by masters such as Wang Xizhi and Ouyang Xun during his formative years at university, he later expanded his repertoire to include other styles like seal carving.

Throughout the decades since graduation, teacher White has been prolifically active – contributing significantly to various exhibitions nationwide while also participating in international events across Asia and beyond. His work has found homes in prestigious institutions like Japan's museums.

One notable event was when Teacher White traveled back-and-forth between Japan ten times between 1985-2002 for cultural exchanges; one particular visit saw him collaborate with Japanese artists for an exhibition titled "Five Chinese Artists" held on Okinawa Island alongside fellow celebrated calligraphers Wang Qing (王铎) and Zhang Daoxing (张道兴).

In addition to these achievements is Teacher White’s dedication towards nurturing young talent through lectures at institutes such as Beijing Normal University where he himself studied under renowned instructors like Liu Daowei (刘大为), Zhang Daoxing(张道兴),and Wang Dongling(王冬岭). This collaboration culminated into "Watercolor Mood: A Joint Exhibition" held at the prestigious Chinese National Art Gallery featuring eighteen prominent figures from both worlds.

His published works include "Introduction to Young Calligraphy," co-authored alongside several esteemed colleagues; "The Four Styles Character Set: Kaisho () / Kōsho (), Seiryo () / Shoryō (), Gyokuji () / Kyokuji (), Reisho () / Ressho)," also co-authored; “White Boiled Ink Collection,” showcasing some of his most remarkable pieces up until then.

Today you can find selected pieces from this masterful collection displayed prominently within respected galleries such as Hong Kong's Art Chang Gallery or even purchase them directly from Beijing’s National-level Artistic Boutique store Honbaozhai ().
